Trail of 100 Giants
The Trail of a Hundred Giants is one of the most popular day hikes in the Valley. Located within the Long Meadow Giant Sequoia Grove, the second most southern grove where giant sequoias are found. The Grove contains 125 giant sequoias over 10 feet in diameter and 143 sequoias under 10 feet in diameter. The largest tree in the grove has a diameter of 20 feet and is 220 feet in height. The grove encompasses 355 acres. It is estimated the age of the trees in the grove are between 500 to 1,500 years old.
Horseback Riding
If your family would like to try their hand riding horses in the great outdoors, the area has two options. Kern Valley Trail Rides offers rides up to 4 hours and is based right here in the Valley. If your interest is riding for longer durations and a bit further into the back country, Golden Trout Pack Trains offers day rides and multi day pack trips.
Kern River Preserve
The Kern River Preserve is managed by Audubon-California for the preservation of one of California’s finest remaining riparian forests and the wildlife it supports. It hosts special events throughout the year including informative nature walks, birding and educational seminars. The Preserve is located in Weldon on the South Fork of the Kern.
Lake Sports
If playing on the lake is how you'd like to spend the day prior to a rafting adventure, the North Fork Marina is your connection for boat and personal water craft rentals as well as good advice on lake fishing. They are located about a mile from our Rafting Center and there is good camping along the lake.
Fly Fishing
The Kern is fast becoming known as a great place to learn and excel at this fun and relaxing sport. Kern River Troutfitters is a full service fly shop that offers rental equipment, educational classes, and day outings along the banks of the Upper Kern.
Kern River Fish Hatchery
Have the kids ever seen a real live fish hatchery? The original Kern River Fish Hatchery was built in 1928 by the Kern County Fish and Protective Game Association. It's located in Kernville (about 5 miles from our Rafting Center). The hatchery remains open to the public and planting continues with one full-time employee, a Fish Hatchery Manager. On the Hatchery grounds are also the manager's home, the local Fish Biologist Office, and the local Game Biologist Office.
Golf
The Kern Valley Golf Course was originally established as a semi-private club but has remained open to the public. Open sunrise to sunset year round to visitors and residents alike, the golf course is closed only on Christmas. Previous guests have mentioned that a day on the golf course is the perfect way to relax and enjoy the Kern River Valley the day prior to starting a two-day Lower Kern trip. It's located only four miles from our Rafting Center and the green fees can't be beat.
Kern Valley Museum
Located in Kernville, the Kern Valley Museum is a great place to show the kids some of the real artifacts from the days of the cowboy. The history and legends of the Old West captured the imagination of the whole world and have been immortalized in print and on film. The Kern River Valley retained the atmosphere of that Old West long after most of California had moved on into the Twentieth Century. In the Kern Valley Museum you will find artifacts and memorabilia which make the history of this valley come alive.
Rich Pelletreau Wildlife Art Gallery
Located just a few blocks from our Rafting Center, the Rich Pelletreau Wildlife Art Gallery is chock full of amazing art pieces depicting wildlife in their natural habitat. Certainly worth taking a peak at during your visit to the Kern.
