Dear Friends of KRO:

Wow, what a season. In December of 2012, the snowpack was deep and the readings were pointing at a big-water Kern rafting season. Things sure changed. Lack of substantial storms coupled with an unusually hot early spring, melted what we had and left Lake Isabella thirsty. In the past, even with a low reservoir we had good seasons. In 33 years of running this river we’ve always had raftable flows. High water, low water, normal water, we can do it, and have plenty of fun.

The phone call came in late April. “I just received the projected flows from the dam.” “Great, what’s our water looking like?” From that conversation forward it has been a very tough year. Today is May 19th and yesterday was our last trip. Last trip for the Upper? No, last trip for the whole thing. Every single Forks, Upper, Lower and Lickety rafting trip has been cancelled from May 19th forward. Everyone at KRO is disappointed, particularly for our guests. Despite the bad news and the nearly impossible situation, every single one of you has been incredibly understanding, so thank you for working with us during this difficult year.

2014 will be a normal year. 2014 might even be a high water year. See you then.

Take care,

Matt Volpert
